J & G Uniform: Your Guide to San Diego Junior Lifeguard Apparel

Mandatory J & G Uniform Items

Participating in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program requires each child to have the following mandatory uniform items. These items are essential for identification, safety, and fostering a team environment during classes.

  • Yellow SDJG Rash Guard: This bright yellow rash guard is a crucial part of the uniform. It provides sun protection and helps instructors easily identify Junior Lifeguards in the water and on the beach.
  • Yellow SDJG T-Shirt: Similar to the rash guard, the yellow t-shirt is another key identifier for program participants. It’s worn for various activities and offers sun protection during land-based training.
  • Red SDJG Boardshorts/Swimsuit: Red bottoms are mandatory. Boys are required to wear red SDJG boardshorts, while girls must wear a red one-piece swimsuit with the SDJG patch. For girls, two-piece swimsuits may be considered but require prior approval from the JG program management.
  • SDJG Hat: Sun protection is paramount. An official SDJG hat is required to shield participants from the sun during outdoor activities.
  • Ocean Swim Fins: For water-based training and drills, appropriate swim fins are necessary. SDJG recommends either Da Fin or Duck Feet fins for their performance and safety features in ocean conditions.

In addition to these mandatory items, optional items like SDJG hoodies and sweatpants are available for cooler days or for layering before and after activities.

Understanding the J & G Uniform Policy

The San Diego Junior Lifeguards has a clear uniform policy in place to maintain safety and uniformity within the program. Here are the key points of the J & G uniform policy:

  1. Tops: Only the official yellow SDJG uniform T-shirt or rash guard are permitted. No other shirts are allowed during class.
  2. Headwear: The SDJG hat must be worn at all times for sun protection while participating in program activities.
  3. Girls’ Swimsuits: Girls must wear a red one-piece swimsuit with the SDJG patch on the front left. Two-piece swimsuits need approval from program management. Acceptable two-piece options, like the Roxy two-piece from Clairemont Surf, are pre-approved.
  4. Girls’ Shorts: If wearing shorts over their swimsuit, girls must wear red shorts with the SDJG patch. Shorts should be plain red, with small brand tags being acceptable but no designer logos or trims.
  5. Boys’ Shorts: Boys are required to wear red shorts with the SDJG patch. Similar to girls’ shorts, they should be plain red without prominent logos or trims, except for small brand tags.
  6. Proper Fit: All shorts must be worn appropriately at the waist, and undergarments should not be visible for boys.
  7. Additional Essentials: Beyond clothing, participants need proper footwear (athletic shoes or sandals), recommended swim fins (Duck Feet or Da Fin), sunscreen, a pen, and their Field Training Guide (FTG).
  8. Optional Uniform Items: Any optional uniform items must be official SDJG apparel. Wetsuits can be worn but only with an official SDJG rash guard underneath.
  9. Jewelry and Hair: For safety, jewelry is not allowed during JG activities, and long hair must be tied back to prevent hazards.
  10. Personal Gear Marking: Clearly label all personal items, including uniform pieces, with the participant’s first and last name for easy identification. The SDJG program is not responsible for lost items.

This uniform policy is also detailed in the Junior Lifeguard Field Training Guide, which participants receive on the second day of their session.
