Black Script Terps: A September Statement
Earlier in the season, Terpsville witnessed the arrival of another striking uniform set. In a move celebrated by fans, Maryland Athletics, under the leadership of Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Damon Evans, announced the return to the beloved Script Terps uniforms for the 2023 season and beyond. Adding to this exciting development, brand new black Script Terps uniforms were introduced.
On Friday, September 15th, Maryland Football showcased these black Script Terps uniforms for the first time during a home game against the Virginia Cavaliers at SECU Stadium. The Terps sported the new black jerseys, complemented by black helmets and black pants, creating a powerful “blackout” effect in the stadium. Fans responded enthusiastically, wearing black to support the team and create a visually unified front against the Cavaliers.

The Iconic Script Terps Uniforms: A Legacy Revived
The decision to reinstate the Script Terps uniforms full-time for the 2023 season is a nod to the rich history of Maryland Football. Damon Evans emphasized the significance of this return, stating, “I’m very excited to announce that we are moving back to an iconic uniform, a classic look, something that our fans have been clamoring for for quite some time.”
Evans further connected the Script Terps uniform to the program’s storied past, referencing legendary coaches like Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen and their championship-winning eras adorned in the Script Terps. He highlighted that “This Script Terps uniform embodies who we are, it symbolizes what it means to be a Maryland football player.”
Coach Michael Locksley, a DMV native with deep roots in Maryland football fandom, also expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the iconic look. Evans noted, “I know our head coach Michael Locksley, someone who grew up in this area, in the DMV, worshiped the Terps in that uniform,” He concluded, “Now it’s time for us to pay that homage and push forward, so I’m happy to bring back this iconic look. Terp Nation, here we come. Here it is.”
The Script Terps uniforms originally debuted in 1982, initially featuring a red helmet and becoming synonymous with Maryland Football throughout the 1980s. From 2001 to 2010, the team sported a white helmet variation with the red Script Terp lettering. Since Coach Locksley’s return in 2019, the Script Terps uniform has made appearances at least once each season, building anticipation for its full-time comeback.
