Remembering Jack E. Vitito: Founder of Jack’s Uniforms & Equipment

Jack E. Vitito, aged 88, of Sloan, IA, formerly of South Sioux City, NE, peacefully passed away on July 31, 2023. His life, marked by entrepreneurial spirit and a love for the outdoors, will be remembered by many, especially for his establishment of Jack’s Uniforms & Equipment in South Sioux City.

Born on June 29, 1935, in Sioux City, IA, to Ralph and Helen (Long) Vitito, Jack’s journey began in the heartland of America. After graduating from South Sioux City High School, he started his career at JCPenney, showcasing his early dedication to customer service and retail. This path took him to Littleton, CO, where he served in the police department, gaining valuable experience in law enforcement and the necessity for reliable equipment. Returning to Sioux City, he rejoined JCPenney, this time in marketing, further honing his business acumen. His career progression within JCPenney led to management roles and relocations to Mankato, MN, and Fort Dodge, IA, setting the stage for his entrepreneurial venture.

In 1972, Jack’s vision culminated in the opening of Jack’s Uniforms & Equipment in South Sioux City, NE. This business became a cornerstone of the community, providing essential uniforms and equipment to various sectors. His experience both in retail and law enforcement provided him with a unique understanding of the needs of his clientele, ensuring Jack’s Uniforms & Equipment offered quality products and exceptional service. The store became known for its commitment to outfitting professionals and individuals with durable and dependable gear.

Beyond his professional life and Jack’s Uniforms & Equipment, Jack was deeply passionate about the outdoors. His hunting property, affectionately named “Triple D” acres after his three sons, was a cherished retreat for family and friends. This love for nature extended into his artistic pursuits. Jack was a talented artist, creating intricate paintings and carvings of wildlife. His dedication to his craft was recognized when his ruddy duck carving earned 3rd place at the prestigious World Championship Carving Competition in Ocean City, Maryland. His outdoor passions included hunting, fishing, photography, and horseback riding, reflecting a life lived in close connection with nature. He was also a committed member of several conservation organizations, including the Northeast Nebraska Sportsman’s Association, Pheasants Forever, and the Wildlife Turkey Association, and contributed to his community through the South Sioux City Police Reserve.

Jack’s legacy continues through his loving family. He is survived by his sons: Dale (Terrie) Vitito, Douglas (Judia) Vitito, and Donald (LeAnne) Vitito; his grandchildren: Tanner, Michael, Sara, and Ryan; and great-grandchildren: Paislley, Axell, Valley, and Logan. He is also remembered by his siblings: Betty (Gene) Ohm, Gary (Sandy) Vitito, and Carolyn (Dan) Viers. Jack was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation to celebrate Jack’s life will be held on Thursday, August 3rd, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will take place on Friday, August 4th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Cemetery. Jack E. Vitito’s impact on his community, both through Jack’s Uniforms & Equipment and his personal passions, will be fondly remembered.
