United States Space Force Unveils Updated Dress Uniform and Grooming Standards

ARLINGTON, Virginia (AFNS) — The U.S. Space Force has officially released its updated grooming and uniform policies, marking a significant step in solidifying the unique identity and culture of the nation’s newest military branch. Announced in a Space Force Guidance Memorandum, these changes, eagerly anticipated by Guardians, aim to ensure that service members’ appearance in uniform accurately reflects the Space Force’s excellence and heritage.

Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger A. Towberman expressed his enthusiasm for the new policy, stating, “Guardians have been waiting a long time for this policy to drop, and I couldn’t be happier to get it out there and start getting this stuff on the shelves.” He acknowledged the patience and input of Guardians in shaping these updates, emphasizing, “It’s time to space it up!”

The updates are detailed in SPFGM2022-36-01 Space Force Guidance Memorandum Establishing U.S. Space Force (USSF) Dress and Appearance Standards. These include new uniform items that Guardians can choose to wear on the interim service dress uniform, along with revisions to grooming and uniform policies. These changes are a direct result of the service’s inaugural uniform board held in 2021 and are designed to further distinguish Guardians while they continue to wear the interim service dress uniform pending the availability of the new, distinct United States Space Force Dress Uniform.

Key Additions to the Space Force Dress Uniform

Several new items have been introduced to enhance the Space Force interim service dress uniform:

  • Enlisted Rank Insignia: New designs for enlisted rank insignia will clearly denote the rank of enlisted Guardians.
  • Hexagonal Nametag: A uniquely shaped hexagonal nametag will further distinguish Space Force personnel.
  • Hexagonal U.S. Lapel Insignia for Enlisted Guardians: Enlisted Guardians will sport a hexagonal U.S. lapel insignia, adding to the distinctive look.
  • Distinctive Service Hat Badges for Officers and Enlisted: Both officers and enlisted members will have access to new, unique service hat badges.
  • Space Force “Delta, Globe and Orbit” Buttons: Buttons featuring the iconic “Delta, Globe and Orbit” Space Force emblem will be incorporated into the uniform.

Updated Grooming and Appearance Policies

Alongside the new uniform components, the Space Force has also updated several grooming and appearance policies to be more inclusive and in line with modern standards:

  • Mustache Restrictions: The policy now allows mustaches to extend to the outer corners of the mouth in a horizontal line, rather than a vertical line, and up to ¼ inch from the corner of the horizontal plane. This provides more flexibility while maintaining a professional appearance.
  • Expanded Nail and Lipstick Colors: Female Guardians now have a broader palette of approved nail and lipstick colors, accommodating a wider range of skin tones and personal preferences. This ensures inclusivity and allows for greater variation within professional standards.
  • Concealer/Foundation for Males: Male Guardians are now permitted to wear inconspicuous concealer or foundation to cover scars and blemishes, promoting confidence and well-being.
  • Tattoo Policy Expansion: The Space Force has aligned its tattoo policy with the most permissive policies of other U.S. military branches. This significantly expands tattoo allowances, including tattoos on the neck and hands. This updated policy reflects evolving societal norms and aims to attract and retain talent.
  • Wear Guidance for Enlisted Rank Insignias: The policy provides specific guidelines on how the new enlisted Guardian rank insignias are to be worn on the uniform, ensuring uniformity and proper display.

Temporary Mess Dress Policy

In another update, the Space Force has temporarily made mess dress optional for all officers. This measure will remain in effect until a distinct Space Force mess dress uniform is designed and becomes available.

This comprehensive update to the grooming and uniform policy represents a significant step forward for the U.S. Space Force. By introducing new uniform items and modernizing grooming standards, the Space Force is actively shaping its unique identity and fostering a culture that reflects the professionalism and heritage of its Guardians. These changes not only enhance the visual distinction of Space Force personnel but also promote inclusivity and individual expression within established military standards.
