The U.S. Navy marked September 30th as the final day for personnel to wear the Navy Working Uniform (NWU) Type I. This date finalized the previously announced transition to the Navy Working Uniform Type III as the standard Navy Service Working Uniform. This change, initially detailed in NAVADMIN 174/16, signifies a significant update to navy uniform regulations.
Effective October 1st, all sailors are required to wear the NWU Type III and the associated eight-point cover featuring the Anchor, Constitution, and Eagle (ACE) logo. This ACE cover replaces the previous eight-point cover that displayed rank insignia. The implementation of the NWU Type III is part of a broader effort to modernize and standardize the Navy’s uniform offerings, enhancing uniformity across the entire force.
The transition period began in October 2017, giving sailors a 24-month window to acquire the necessary NWU Type III components. To assist with this transition, active duty sailors received an increase in their annual clothing replacement allowance. This financial support was intended to ease the purchase of the new navy service working uniform.
Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) played a crucial role in supporting sailors during this uniform change. NEXCOM urged sailors needing the NWU Type III to visit NEX locations worldwide or contact customer service at 877–810–9030 before the deadline. Recognizing potential logistical needs, NEXCOM also highlighted the two-week lead time required by NEX tailors for special orders and name tape sewing.
“NEXCOM is well-prepared to provide our sailors with a complete inventory of the NWU Type III in our stores and distribution centers,” stated Capt. John Cassani, Deputy Commander of Navy Uniforms at NEXCOM. “Our dedicated uniform staff and call center are ready to help sailors with any questions they might have regarding sizing and proper wear of the new navy service working uniform.”

In conclusion, the shift to the NWU Type III and ACE cover represents the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a modern, efficient, and unified appearance. Sailors are now fully transitioned to this updated navy service working uniform, ensuring consistent standards across the force.
