Gainesville, FL – In a historic move, the Florida Gators football team is set to don alternate black uniforms for the very first time, marking a significant moment in the program’s history. These striking uniforms will be worn during the highly anticipated ‘Saluting Those Who Serve’ game against the Arkansas Razorbacks on November 4th. This special game, presented by VyStar Credit Union, is dedicated to honoring the brave members of the armed forces, veterans, and local first responders.
The alternate black uniforms are designed to not only create excitement among fans but also to deeply resonate with the spirit of teamwork and core values shared by military personnel and first responders. In a unique tribute, each player’s nameplate on the back of their jersey will be replaced with one of five powerful words: Commitment, Courage, Excellence, Honor, and Integrity. These words, carefully selected by representatives from each branch of the military and first responder organizations, represent the fundamental principles embodied by those who dedicate their lives to service.
Florida Head Coach Billy Napier emphasized the true purpose behind the uniform initiative. “I know Gator Nation is excited about the team wearing black uniforms, but I don’t want us to lose sight of the intent relative to creating awareness and showing gratitude and appreciation for all branches of our military and first responders,” Napier stated. “We’re doing something that’s going to be a lot of fun, but ultimately, we’re hopeful that we can recognize and show appreciation for a lot of selfless people that have chosen a profession of service and put their lives at risk each day.”
Beyond the game day spectacle, the Gators are committed to extending their recognition of service members throughout the week leading up to the Arkansas matchup. The team will host a member from each branch of the U.S. military to address the players at the conclusion of each practice session. This initiative aims to deepen the team members’ understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in service. “I think there’s a lot we can learn from these special people,” Napier commented. “Last year we were able to invite members of the military to talk to the team and it was pretty awesome to hear from them. I know it impacted our players and staff in a positive way. It’s really important to me in terms of creating a level of respect and gratitude for some of these things that we take for granted at times.”
Tickets are now available for the ‘Saluting Those Who Serve’ game against Arkansas on November 4th. In a commendable gesture, for every ticket purchased, the UAA will donate a ticket to a local military hero, with a goal of donating up to 2,000 tickets. This initiative provides an opportunity for the community to come together, support the Gators, and express collective gratitude to those who serve.
