More Than Just Uniforms: Discovering Inclusion in the Israeli Army Through Special in Uniform

My journey to Israel with a Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA) mission in May 2019 was more transformative than I could have ever imagined. Before receiving the itinerary, I was unaware that our first day included a visit to a JNF project at Palmachim Air Base called Special in Uniform. This unique program, which integrates young people with disabilities into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), immediately sparked my interest. During our visit, I learned that Special in Uniform not only provides these individuals with the opportunity to serve their country but also equips them with valuable career skills for life after their army service, fostering a sense of belonging often symbolized by the Israeli Army Uniform.

This resonated deeply with me. The unexpected passing of my brother Barry, who had special needs, in July 2018 was still a fresh wound. As I listened to the participants at the base share their stories, I felt a profound connection to Barry. Their desires mirrored his: to contribute meaningfully, to utilize their unique abilities, to forge lasting friendships, and above all, to feel included and valued. The israeli army uniform they wore represented so much more than military service; it was a symbol of acceptance and integration into the heart of Israeli society.

The significance of the IDF extends far beyond national security in Israeli society; it’s a cornerstone of social cohesion. Special in Uniform enables individuals with special needs to serve their country with dignity, breaking down barriers and fostering integration in unprecedented ways. Participants contribute their skills in various roles, from essential tasks like inventory management to assembling crucial COVID testing kits. Beyond their duties, the program facilitates interaction with soldiers from diverse units during meals and throughout the base, cultivating genuine and enduring friendships. Wearing the israeli army uniform alongside their peers reinforces their sense of purpose and camaraderie.

Returning from the trip, the impact of Special in Uniform lingered. It was the opening experience of our mission, setting a powerful tone for the entire journey. Meeting these remarkable individuals, my “special needs brothers and sisters” volunteering and serving in the army, profoundly touched me. In memory of Barry’s first yahrzeit, I felt compelled to give back to JNF. Fundraising seemed the most fitting tribute. Initially setting a goal of $1,800, I was astonished to reach it within 24 hours. Raising the target to $3,600, then $5,000, the support continued to pour in. Ultimately, exceeding all expectations, over $20,000 has been raised since July 2019, a testament to the inspiring work of Special in Uniform and the deep human need for inclusion and purpose, values embodied in every israeli army uniform.
