ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan women’s basketball team is set to clash with the Oregon Ducks at Crisler Center this Saturday, February 2nd, at noon. This highly anticipated matchup is also Michigan’s annual Pink Game, a special event dedicated to raising awareness and support in the fight against breast cancer, presented by the Rogel Cancer Center.
The Wolverines (14-7, 5-5 Big Ten) are looking to break a two-game losing streak as they return home to face Oregon (16-5, 7-3 Big Ten). Beyond the excitement of Big Ten basketball, the Pink Game holds significant meaning, bringing the community together for a vital cause.
Fans attending the game will be treated to a series of special promotions. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Pink Replica Jersey Giveaway, allowing them to show their support in style. Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, Pink Pom Giveaways will be available for all fans, turning Crisler Center into a sea of pink.
A particularly moving moment of the day will be the Special Halftime Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition. All breast cancer survivors in attendance are invited to be honored on the court during halftime for their incredible strength and courage. Survivors can find further details at the marketing tables on gameday to participate in this recognition.
Game Notes: Freshmen Shine for Wolverines
Despite the recent setbacks, Michigan has shown impressive performances throughout the season. Notably, freshman Olivia Olson recently joined fellow freshman Syla Swords in the 30-point club, scoring 30 points against Wisconsin. This remarkable achievement makes Michigan the only school in the nation to have two different freshmen reach the 30-point mark in a single game this season.
Another standout freshman, Mila Holloway, has seamlessly taken on the starting point guard role, starting in all 21 games. She is averaging 10.3 points and 4.3 assists per game, leading the team in assists in 14 games. Holloway is a unique freshman in the Big Ten, being one of only five first-year players nationally averaging double figures in points and at least four assists per game.
The freshman trio of Swords, Olson, and Holloway has consistently been a driving force for the Wolverines. In a recent victory against No. 23 Minnesota, they combined for 54 of Michigan’s 70 points. Currently, Olson leads the team in scoring (16.6 ppg), Swords in rebounding (6.1 rpg), and Holloway in assists (4.3 apg). Michigan stands out in the Big Ten as the only team with freshmen leading in these three key statistical categories.
For the Pink Game, Michigan will be sporting special maize uniforms with pink trim and pink shoes, visually representing their commitment to breast cancer awareness. Adding a personal touch, Greta Kampschroeder designed the warmup shirt that the coaching staff will wear during the game.
Looking ahead, after the Pink Game, Michigan will embark on a two-game road trip, facing Nebraska and Michigan State. However, this Saturday, the focus is on Crisler Center, where the Wolverines and their fans will unite in pink to support breast cancer awareness while cheering on their team against the Oregon Ducks.
