The U.S. Space Force has officially rolled out updated grooming and uniform policies, marking a significant step in solidifying the distinct identity and culture of the newest military branch. Announced in a Space Force Guidance Memorandum, these changes reflect feedback directly from Guardians, ensuring the uniforms and standards genuinely represent the service’s excellence and heritage.
Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger A. Towberman expressed enthusiasm for the new policy, stating, “Guardians have been waiting a long time for this policy to drop, and I couldn’t be happier to get it out there and start getting this stuff on the shelves.” He highlighted the importance of Guardian input in shaping these updates and acknowledged their patience throughout the policy development process. “It’s time to space it up!” he added, signifying the unique direction of the Space Force.
These updates, detailed in SPFGM2022-36-01 Space Force Guidance Memorandum Establishing U.S. Space Force (USSF) Dress and Appearance Standards, introduce new uniform items as optional additions to the interim service dress uniform. These changes, stemming from the inaugural Space Force uniform board in 2021, aim to further distinguish Guardians while they await the arrival of the fully developed Space Force service dress uniform.
The newly approved uniform items designed to enhance the Space Force Dress Uniform include:
- Enlisted Rank Insignia: Distinctive insignia to denote enlisted ranks within the Space Force.
- Hexagonal Nametag: A uniquely shaped nametag, adopting a hexagonal design.
- Hexagonal U.S. Lapel Insignia: Hexagonal U.S. lapel insignia specifically for enlisted Guardians.
- Distinctive Service Hat Badges: Unique hat badges for both officers and enlisted personnel, setting them apart.
- Space Force “Delta, Globe and Orbit” Buttons: Buttons featuring the iconic Space Force emblem, “Delta, Globe and Orbit”.
Guardians Showcase Updated Space Force Dress Uniform Policy
Beyond uniform items, the policy memorandum also outlines key updates to grooming standards. Some notable changes include:
- Mustache Restrictions: Relaxing mustache regulations to align with the outer corners of the mouth in a horizontal line, rather than a vertical line, and extending up to ¼ inch from the corner of the horizontal plane.
- Expanded Nail and Lipstick Colors: Broadening the color palette for nail and lipstick options for female Guardians, accommodating a wider range of skin tones and personal preferences with approved color variations.
- Concealer/Foundation for Males: Allowing male Guardians to use inconspicuous concealer or foundation to cover scars and blemishes, promoting a more inclusive standard.
- Tattoo Policy Expansion: Adopting a more lenient tattoo policy, matching current sister service policies. This updated policy is considered the least restrictive to date, now permitting neck and hand tattoos.
- Enlisted Rank Insignia Wear Guidance: Providing specific guidelines on how to wear the new enlisted Guardian rank insignias on the Space Force dress uniform.
Finally, a temporary measure within the policy makes mess dress optional for all officers until a dedicated Space Force mess dress uniform becomes available.
