“As soon as the football season wraps up in January, my mind is already on the upcoming season,” Dobson shares, revealing her proactive approach. “Time management is crucial as I juggle various projects. If I were to create a dcc uniform from start to finish in one go, it would take approximately 10 to 12 hours. However, I prefer to work in stages. One day might be dedicated to cutting out and sewing all the shorts. Another day, I’ll focus on the vests. Perhaps cuffs or collars will be the task for another session. I typically leave the blouses for last.” This segmented approach allows for focused attention to detail and maintains efficiency throughout the lengthy process of creating multiple dcc uniforms.

Dobson continues, “This process works best for my workflow. I am incredibly fortunate to have my own studio space, which is my sanctuary. It’s a very Zen environment that allows me to fully concentrate. It generally takes most of the spring season to complete around 25 dcc uniforms. The segmented approach is essential for maintaining momentum and preventing overwhelm. If I were to complete each dcc uniform from beginning to end consecutively, the sheer volume of 25 looming ahead could feel daunting! Breaking it down into specific daily tasks makes the process much more manageable and enjoyable. There’s a particular satisfaction in perfectly setting zippers in shorts, achieving a flawless finish without needing to undo and redo any stitches. Of course, ripping out stitches is also a significant part of the process. Sometimes it feels like I spend as much time un-sewing as I do sewing! But ultimately, it’s a process I genuinely love and eagerly anticipate each year.” Dobson’s passion for her craft shines through as she describes even the tedious aspects of creating the dcc uniform.

“Fittings Day takes place during Training Camp,” Dobson describes. “I bring along blank uniform pieces – completed shorts without hems, vests without fringe, and blouses without cuffs. I assess each girl and estimate their sizes. For some, the standard pieces fit perfectly with no alterations needed. For others, I mark areas needing adjustments. Occasionally, I even have to re-cut an entire dcc uniform to accommodate a cheerleader’s unique physique.” This personalized fitting process ensures each cheerleader has a dcc uniform that is not only iconic but also perfectly tailored to them.

Dobson continues, “Approximately a month later, the completed dcc uniform is ready for each girl. That day is incredibly special for them as they finally get to wear their finished dcc uniform. Adding to the excitement, the makeup artists and hairstylists are also there, making it the first day these rookies truly see themselves as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader from head-to-toe, complete with the dcc uniform, hair, and makeup.” This “transforming day” is a pivotal moment in the journey of becoming a DCC cheerleader, and Dobson plays a key role in making it a reality through the dcc uniform.
“It’s such a transformative moment for so many of the rookies,” Dobson reflects. “They have been working tirelessly throughout Training Camp, and when they finally look in the mirror and see a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader looking back at them, it’s incredibly rewarding. That’s the moment I sew for. That’s the ultimate payoff.” Dobson’s dedication is deeply rooted in the human element of her work, understanding the profound impact the dcc uniform has on these young women.

“Once the football season is underway, when I watch the games, it’s not just for entertainment,” Dobson admits. “While it’s fun to see them perform, I’m also analyzing everything from a professional perspective, ensuring the dcc uniforms look impeccable. In my mind, the job is never truly over.” Her commitment to maintaining the visual excellence of the DCC extends beyond the studio and into the stadium.
During a game last December, Dobson received an unexpected invitation to the DCC locker room. It wasn’t for a quick fix to a wardrobe malfunction, but for a truly special occasion.
Dobson and Paula Van Wagoner, the visionary fashion designer who originally created the iconic dcc uniform in 1972, were invited as special guests by DCC director Kelli Finglass. Finglass shared the momentous news of The Smithsonian’s decision to include dcc uniforms in their esteemed collection.

Going to design school, I never envisioned myself sewing for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders specifically. In fact, I initially thought my path would be solely in design, not necessarily in sewing. But having the opportunity to craft something that is so widely recognized and respected, and now to see it enshrined in The Smithsonian, it’s still quite surreal and I’m still processing the magnitude of it.” The recognition from The Smithsonian served as an ultimate validation of Dobson’s talent and dedication to the dcc uniform.
The honor bestowed by The Smithsonian was made even more meaningful because Dobson was able to share this extraordinary moment with her family.
“My family has been incredibly supportive throughout my career, and they are immensely proud of this recognition from The Smithsonian, as it truly is something special,” Dobson shares with warmth. “Over the years, my work has been a constant presence in our lives, sometimes requiring sacrifices and missed events to meet deadlines. My involvement with the DCC has been an integral part of my daughters’ lives. My husband has been wonderfully patient and understanding, especially when deadlines approach and stress levels rise! My eldest daughter and her husband, who reside in New York City, made the trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the ceremony. Having my family there to share in this momentous occasion was truly wonderful.” The Smithsonian recognition became a celebration of not just Dobson’s individual achievement but also the collective support of her family.
“Now, my stitches are a part of history, which is a powerful testament to the value of striving for excellence in everything you do,” Dobson concludes. “The entire day at The Smithsonian felt like a dream. I had to keep reminding myself, ‘Yes, this is really happening!’ It was an incredibly proud day for me and for everyone associated with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.” Lisa Dobson’s story is a remarkable example of how dedication to craft, combined with passion and commitment, can lead to extraordinary and historical recognition, all through the creation of the iconic dcc uniform.
