This gold uniform reveal follows the earlier unveiling of another fantastic addition to the Terps’ wardrobe: the black Script Terps uniforms. Announced in April by Maryland Athletics and Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics, Damon Evans, the return to the classic Script Terps uniform full-time for the 2023 season was already a major win for fans. Then, on Friday, September 15th, the team took the field in brand new black Script Terps uniforms for their game against the Virginia Cavaliers at SECU Stadium. These black uniforms, also featuring a black helmet and black pants, provided a striking blackout look for the Terps.
The decision to bring back the Script Terps uniforms full-time reflects a deep connection to the program’s rich history. Damon Evans himself emphasized the significance of this iconic look, stating, “I’m very excited to announce that we are moving back to an iconic uniform, a classic look, something that our fans have been clamoring for for quite some time.” He further linked the Script Terps uniform to the program’s glory days, mentioning legendary coaches Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen and the championships won while wearing this classic design. Evans highlighted that the Script Terps uniform “embodies who we are, it symbolizes what it means to be a Maryland football player.”
Coach Michael Locksley, a DMV native with deep roots in Maryland football, also expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the Script Terps. Evans noted, “I know our head coach Michael Locksley, someone who grew up in this area, in the DMV, worshiped the Terps in that uniform.” This return to tradition honors the past while propelling the program forward into an exciting future.
The Script Terps uniform originally debuted in 1982, becoming synonymous with Maryland football throughout the 1980s, primarily with a red helmet. The white helmet with the red Script Terps writing was later adopted from 2001-2010. Since Coach Locksley’s return in 2019, the Script Terps uniform has made appearances at least once each season, building anticipation for its full-time comeback and now, the exciting addition of gold and black variations.
