Ohio State Buckeyes Unveil Rose Bowl Uniforms: A Nod to Tradition

The No. 1 Oregon Ducks and the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes are set to clash in the highly anticipated 2025 Rose Bowl quarterfinal game, a matchup that has fans buzzing with excitement. As the underdog, the Oregon Ducks are riding high on an undefeated 13-0 season, crowned champions of the Big Ten Conference. Meanwhile, the Ohio State Buckeyes are hungry for a win, seeking to avenge their narrow 32-31 loss to the Ducks earlier in the season at Autzen Stadium.

Adding to the pre-game anticipation, both teams have revealed their uniform selections for this prestigious event. Oregon has unveiled a “Generation O” uniform, drawing inspiration from past Ducks Rose Bowl attire. Not to be outdone, Ohio State has also presented their gear for the Pasadena showdown, showcased by quarterback Will Howard and defensive end Jack Sawyer.

The Buckeyes will sport a classic white “away team” uniform as their base, accented with striking red detailing and subtle silver and black touches. The pants are silver, while the cleats appear to be white Nike models, complete with a black swoosh. The gloves are red, featuring white elements and darker red ridges, along with the signature Nike swoosh near the wrist.

A traditional Rose Bowl patch is prominently placed beneath the red Big Ten Conference logo on the uniform’s right shoulder, a testament to the game’s rich history and prestige.

Initially, social media posts showcased the Buckeye helmets in grey with a central stripe of red, white, and black, finished with a grey facemask. However, a subsequent reveal highlighted a special addition: the historic “Rose stripe”. This unique stripe replaces the typical red stripe down the helmet’s center and features a glossy red material embossed with a rose pattern.

The “Rose stripes” are not new to Ohio State, having been previously worn in their last Rose Bowl appearance in 2022, where they secured a thrilling 48-45 victory over Utah.

Ohio State’s uniform choice for the 2025 Rose Bowl leans into tradition, mirroring their typical road game attire as the lower-seeded team. This contrasts with their previous two Rose Bowl appearances where they sported crimson-themed uniforms.

Just as the Buckeyes are embracing their heritage, the Oregon Ducks are also paying homage to their past Rose Bowl moments with their uniform design. Oregon’s social media reveal showcased a video highlighting various Rose Bowl uniforms that inspired their current green, white, and chrome look. These inspirations include the iconic 2020 Rose Bowl “liquid chrome” helmets and the debut of apple green jerseys in 2015, among other memorable Oregon uniform combinations.

This second clash between these college football giants carries significant playoff implications, and the uniform reveals suggest both the Buckeyes and Ducks are eagerly anticipating this New Year’s challenge.

“I think it’s all your attention is on, obviously, they’re the No. 1 seed that you’re playing,” Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly commented on facing the Ducks. “And they’re the No. 1 seed for a reason. They’re the only undefeated team in college football. So, that gets your attention right away, so you don’t have to muster up any type of other motivation in terms of what people say about us. It’s a really good football team. Turn on the tape, and they’re going to challenge us. And our guys are really excited about that challenge.”

“This is stuff you dream off. This is why you come to Oregon,” Ducks offensive lineman Josh Conerly Jr. stated, emphasizing the importance of the game. “This exact game – This is where you want to be. This is what you live your whole life for. This is what you play football for.”

The Rose Bowl showdown between the Ducks and Buckeyes is scheduled for Wednesday at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, kicking off at 2 p.m. PT.
