St. John’s Uniforms: Dress Code and Guidelines

At St. John’s, our uniform policy is thoughtfully designed to cultivate a sense of community, ensure practicality for both students and parents, and maintain a standard easily upheld by the school. We expect all students and parents to thoroughly understand and adhere to the St. John’s Uniform Dress Code. It’s important to note that all faculty and administrators are authorized to determine the appropriateness of attire in relation to the Uniform Dress Code and to implement consequences for any non-compliance.

Our official school uniforms are exclusively provided by Tommy Hilfiger, ensuring quality and consistency. For families seeking more economical options, our Uniform Closet, conveniently situated between the Art and Music Rooms, offers a wide selection of gently used uniforms. Detailed information and specific guidelines regarding uniforms can be found in the parent/student handbook, a valuable resource for all St. John’s families.

Spirit Days at St. John’s

Participating in Spirit Days is a special privilege granted to St. John’s students who consistently follow the school’s uniform code. These fun days are typically scheduled on Fridays, adding an element of excitement to the end of the week. Any special Spirit Days that deviate from the usual Friday schedule will be clearly announced in the Jet Gazette, our school newsletter, keeping everyone informed. Students who have not maintained uniform compliance and have been denied Spirit Day privileges are required to wear their standard school uniform on Spirit Days to ensure they are still adhering to the basic dress code expectations.

Athletic Game Day Uniforms for St. John’s Athletes

For our dedicated Grade 5-8 athletes at St. John’s, game days come with a special uniform perk. Athletes in good standing with the dress code have the privilege of wearing their Team Jersey over their standard dress code shirt, paired with dress code bottoms. This allows them to proudly represent their team while maintaining a school-appropriate appearance. When an athletic event takes place on a Saturday or Sunday, team members are permitted to wear their Jersey on the preceding Friday, the last school day of that week, extending the spirit into the school day.

Our spirited Spirit Squad members also have the opportunity to wear their full uniform to school on game days or on the last school day of the week, but this is subject to the principal’s approval, ensuring alignment with school event planning. For Spirit Squad uniforms that include shorter skirts, leggings are required to be worn underneath to maintain modesty and appropriateness. Alternatively, tops can be paired with warm-ups for comfort and coverage.

Scouting Uniforms at St. John’s

St. John’s proudly supports students involved in scouting. Students who are in compliance with the general school dress code are allowed to wear their traditional scout uniform on days when their scout meetings take place. This acknowledges their commitment to scouting while still ensuring they meet school dress standards for meeting days. It is important to remember that scout uniform shirts must be tucked in at the waist to maintain a neat and presentable appearance within the school environment. However, please note that hats are not permitted to be worn inside the school building during the school day, even as part of the scout uniform.

Picture Day Dress Code at St. John’s

For Fall Picture Day at St. John’s, we require students to adhere to the standard Uniform Dress Code Clothing. This ensures a consistent and formal look for the official fall portraits. However, we offer a bit more flexibility for Spring Picture Day, where students have the option to be out of uniform. If choosing to be out of uniform for Spring Picture Day, students should still ensure their clothing is appropriate for a school setting. Specifically, we ask that attire avoids being midriff-revealing, bare back, low neck, thin strap, or off the shoulder. This guidance helps ensure all students are comfortable and appropriately dressed for their spring photos.

Eighth Grade Graduation Attire at St. John’s

Graduation is a momentous occasion at St. John’s, and appropriate attire is essential to reflect the formality of the event. For Eighth Grade Graduation, specific dress guidelines are in place.

Boys: The expected attire for boys includes dress slacks, a dress shirt, and a tie for both the graduation mass and the reception following. A jacket is optional, allowing for comfort based on the weather.

Girls: Girls are asked to wear dresses that are at least knee-length. Similar to picture day guidelines, dresses should not be bare back, thin strap, strapless, or off-the-shoulder. To ensure compliance and allow ample time for any adjustments, graduation dresses must be submitted to the homeroom teacher for approval at least one month prior to the graduation ceremony. This process helps ensure that all attire is suitable and celebratory for this important milestone.
