US Coast Guard Uniforms: Embracing the New Working Uniform (CGWU)

Exciting news is on the horizon for the United States Coast Guard! After much anticipation and some sneak peeks, the new Coast Guard working uniform (CGWU) is officially on its way. The rollout is scheduled for the end of fiscal year 2023, marking a significant update to the operational attire of the Coast Guard.

Smooth Transition from ODU to CGWU

The transition to the CGWU will be phased, ensuring a smooth changeover for all personnel. The new uniform will become available for the entire Coast Guard workforce in the latter part of fiscal year 2023. The operational dress uniform (ODU) will be fully replaced by the CGWU by fiscal year 2025. Once the CGWU is released, you can find it at Coast Guard Exchanges and online via ShopCGX. For those who recently purchased new ODUs, there’s no need to worry. Both uniform types have an expected service life of approximately three years, aligning with the CGWU’s availability for a timely transition.

To assist with the cost of the new uniforms, enlisted members will see adjustments to their clothing monthly allowance (CMA) starting in fiscal year 2022. This proactive measure will provide financial support for the uniform replacement before it becomes mandatory.

Why the Switch to the Coast Guard Working Uniform?

The decision to adopt the CGWU is rooted in practical experience and positive feedback. For over a decade, Coast Guard members in Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE), Port Security Units (PSU), and joint overseas operations have utilized the Navy’s Expeditionary Working Uniform (NWU Type III).

The consistent performance of the NWU Type III in these demanding roles demonstrated its suitability for a wide range of Coast Guard missions. The positive reception from personnel who field-tested the Navy Type III uniform further solidified the decision to adopt a similar design as the standard operational uniform for the entire Coast Guard. This strategic move leverages the proven effectiveness and practicality of this uniform style for all Coast Guard operations.

Key Features and Benefits of the CGWU

The new Type III uniform brings several advantageous features to enhance functionality and comfort for Coast Guard personnel:

  • Mandarin Collar: Designed for rapid adaptation to General Quarters/Battle conditions, offering added protection and a streamlined profile.
  • Rank Tab: Facilitates easy rank adjustments upon promotion or advancement, eliminating the need for uniform replacement or tailoring, saving both time and resources.
  • Additional Pocket: Provides increased storage capacity for essential gear and personal items, enhancing operational readiness and convenience.
  • Self-Blousing Trousers: Ensure a neat and professional appearance while offering practicality and ease of movement in various operational environments.
  • Organizational Patches: Allows for quick and clear identification of service affiliation, promoting unit cohesion and professional presentation.

Adopting a uniform pattern already in use by another branch of the armed forces offers significant benefits. By aligning with a sister service, the Coast Guard can reduce production costs through economies of scale. These cost savings are then passed on to Coast Guard members, making uniforms more affordable.

Understanding CGWU Sizing

The CGWU introduces a non-gender-specific sizing system, a welcome change from the operational dress uniform (ODU) blouse’s confusing odd/even sizing. CGWU blouses are sized based on chest measurement and shirt length, while trousers are sized by waist and inseam measurements. To ensure a proper fit, personnel are encouraged to take their measurements or seek assistance from a colleague. Accurate measurements will be crucial when ordering the new Coast Guard uniforms.

Timeline of CGWU Implementation

Development approval for the new CGWU was granted at the end of 2019. Extensive collaboration between Coast Guard Military Uniforms (PSC-PSD-MU) and the Navy followed, focusing on the adoption of the NWU Type III pattern. Agreements were reached on various aspects, including color, contracting, and sustainment. Initial projections anticipated fleet availability by the end of fiscal year 2022.

However, the global pandemic caused significant disruptions to the U.S. Textile and Industrial Base. Manufacturing shutdowns and shifts to PPE production led to delays in garment manufacturing. Despite these challenges, Coast Guard uniform contracts were updated in August 2021, following further coordination with the Navy and Defense Logistics Agency.

The Coast Guard is now back on track. The new uniform is expected to reach accession points – recruit trainees, Academy cadets, officer candidates, and direct commissions – starting in the first quarter of fiscal year 2023. The broader fleet will be able to purchase the CGWU later in fiscal year 2023.
