Have you ever wondered what happens to old military uniforms? While they represent service and dedication, USO Wisconsin has found a unique and comforting way to repurpose them. They transform these recognizable uniforms into something special for military children: teddy bears.
USO Wisconsin, with the help of dedicated volunteers, is collecting bags of old uniforms and giving them a heartwarming new purpose. Instead of being stored away, these uniforms are being carefully taken apart and sewn into cuddly teddy bears. This initiative provides a tangible connection for children to their deployed parents.
“This is just another connection where the kid gets to keep connected with their parent even though they are gone,” explains Josh Sova, Executive Director of USO Wisconsin. These teddy bears serve as a comforting reminder of their parents who are serving overseas, whether for a few months or longer.
Volunteer Carla Lonski understands the emotional weight of deployment. “I’m sure it’s heart wrenching to say goodbye to a parent… I’m sure it’s very traumatic,” she says, highlighting the importance of providing comfort to these children during challenging times.
Amber Methum, another volunteer, brings a personal understanding to the project. “I was in a military home. My father was in the army… and I can just imagine being the child who would have loved to receive one,” she shares. Her experience fuels her dedication to creating these special bears.
As volunteers meticulously work on each bear, they are mindful of the families who will receive them. “While you can’t replace a parent who is overseas… my hope is that it will be something that will comfort them in that time,” Methum adds.
These aren’t just ordinary teddy bears. They are designed with a Velcro patch to hold a parent’s name or military branch, adding a personal touch. This thoughtful detail allows children to keep a piece of their parent close, offering solace when they are physically apart.
Each bear is made at a minimal cost, around one dollar. USO Wisconsin is actively seeking more uniform donations from all military branches to meet the demand for upcoming deployments. By donating uniforms, you can contribute to this touching initiative.
